20 September 2015

The Blackmores Sydney Marathon, part of the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, has been awarded the prestigious top honour of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Road Race Gold Label status - recognising the event alongside household names of marathons such as London, Boston and New York.

The IAAF awards road race labels to marathons each year who meet strict criteria for excellence in planning and delivery. To achieve IAAF Road Race Gold Label status Blackmores Sydney Marathon met the required criteria in;

  • Quality of the International field of elite athletes
  • Race organisation
  • Course measurement
  • Timing and results
  • Media service
  • Medical provisions
  • Broadcast distribution.

Event Director Wayne Larden recognises that the Gold Label will help raise the profile of the event world-wide.

“The IAAF Road Race Gold Label status helps put the Blackmores Sydney Marathon further on the map in terms of marathons to choose from amongst the burgeoning leisure tourism market. Sydney is the No.1 visitor destination in Australia and our aim is to be the No.1 destination marathon and this award will certainly assist in this goal,” said Mr Larden.

“With the support of the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, we now produce a 3hr30min live TV broadcast that is postcard style coverage of the Blackmores Sydney Marathon. It showcases the spectacular Sydney course which traverses iconic locations including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. The broadcast is shown inkey visitor  markets which this year included Australia, New Zealand, five networks in mainland China with a reach of 44 million households,FUJI TV in Japan to an estimated 12 million viewers in addition to EuroSport Asia’s coverage into 18 other Asia Pacific countries.  Our delayed 1hr highlights program also goes into over 200 countries worldwide.

“This year alone we had a 33 percent increase in overseas and 20 percent increase in interstate participation.  With the additional exposure through the event’s broadcast in key participant source markets and IAAF Gold Label recognition we expect to see a significant rise in international and interstate visitor numbers providing a substantial and positive impact to the local economy,” he said.

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Troy Grant said, “To be awarded Gold Label status is a fantastic achievement which cements the Sydney Marathon’s reputation as one of the world’s premier endurance events. The NSW Government is proud to be a strategic partner in this event through Destination NSW and I applaud the event organisers for their efforts in receiving this prestigious label.”
