Venue roles & responsibilities
Volunteers distributing water at the finishWe operate three venues on event day with volunteers posted at all three, including; Start Venue – Bradfield Park, Milson’s Point, Finish Line – Sydney Opera House and Recovery Village – Royal Botanic Gardens.
Team leader: venues
This role requires you to coordinate and instruct your crew to successfully operate your assigned venue. You will act as the first point of contact for your crew members. You must be available to attend a mandatory evening training / briefing session prior to the event day to gain further information about your role and responsibilities as team leader. You will be providing operational leadership to your team prior to and on event day.
2IC / Workforce support: venues
This role requires you to liaise with and follow instructions from your team leader and event organisers, assisting them to coordinate your crew. The role of the 2IC (second-in-charge) / Workforce support is to perform crew check-in/out, to support the team leader in the deployment of your crew members and the coordination of your area on event day. The role of the 2IC / Workforce support in venues will vary depending on the assigned location. You must be available to attend a mandatory evening training / briefing session prior to the event day to gain further information about your role and responsibilities as 2IC / Workforce support.
Crew roles: venues
Crew members at the venue locations are required to perform assigned tasks and follow instructions of team leaders and 2IC’s. The role of the crew in venues will vary depending on the location, role and task. Crew will work with together to set-up, operate and clean-up their area. To complete your role as a crew member there is a recommended training evening for all crew prior to the event where we will brief you on your role. The following roles will be performed by Crew Members:
Registration: Start
Volunteers working at the Registration desk will assist by handing out of race bibs and information to participants prior to their event.
Clothing crew: Start
The crew at the clothing start will provide assistance by collecting the athlete’s clothing bags and sorting these out in order for them to be transported to the Recovery Village for pick up after the race. Please note that the start time for this task is early as it will be carried out prior to event start times.
Start chute: Start
Volunteers working in the start chute assist with ensuring participants are entering the correct starting chutes.
Finish Chute Marshal: Finish
Finish Chute Marshals will provide directional assistance and encouragement to participant runners within the finish chute at the Sydney Opera House finish line.
Medal Distribution: Finish
The medal distribution team will work to ensure all participants receive a medal of participation at the completion of their event. Medals for each of the events will differ slightly.
Clothing Crew: Recovery
This role requires energetic and enthusiastic crew to unload clothing trucks and to arrange the baggage in numerical and event order. This task requires crew to follow instruction to ensure the most efficient system is adopted.
Blackmores Marathon Recovery Zone: Finish
The crew undertaking this role will be required to award marathon runners with their marathon t-shirts and medal within the designated Blackmores Marathon Recovery Zone.
Drink Station: Start, Finish and Recovery
Volunteers will assist to set-up and operate drink stations within venues.
Sydney Opera House volunteers will hand out water bottles, while other venues will service the participants with cups of water. This is a highly sought after job. First in best dressed.
Wayfinding: Start, Finish and Recovery
Wayfinding crew roam within venues (Start, Finish and Recovery) to provide directional assistance and information to race participants and spectators on event day.
Roaming Spruikers: Start, Finish and Recovery
Crew undertaking the job of roaming spruiker will be required to have a confident, enthusiastic and approachable nature. Volunteers in this role will be briefed with key messages to announce to encourage event participants, and to provide direction and instructions.
